International Dental Journal 57(5_supp): 351-363 Since the mid-20th century, a great deal of research and development has been directed to improve the quality, effectiveness and functionality of toothpastes. This review considers the technological advances and scientific background to the development of dentifrices for a variety of expressed different purposes, from caries reduction through incorporation of fluoride, through periodontal disease prevention by use of anti-microbials to tooth whitening, breath freshening and reducing hypersensitivity and calculus formation.
