Ameloblastoma is the second most common odontogenic neoplasm after odontoma, accounting for 1% of all jaw tumors. Although the 1992 World Health Organization classification characterizes ameloblastoma as a benign but locally invasive epithelial odontogenic neoplasm, its aggressive biologic behavior evokes wide differences of opinion among investigators concerning its position in the neoplastic spectrum. This has led some investigators to refer to ameloblastoma as a low-grade malignant tumor because it is prone to recur, capable of aggressive local invasion, and capable of metastasizing to distant sites.
